According to preliminary data from the CDC, there were an estimated 48,422 deaths involving synthetic opioids (primarily fentanyl) in the United States in 2024.
In 2022, Arizona had 1,735 fentanyl deaths, or 24.9 for every 100,000 residents.
Illicit fentanyl is coming into the US daily and is being marketed to children and young adults. It is often cut into other drugs and made to look like candy or other prescription drugs. Even small doses are lethal.
Theresa Guerrero and Kira Moore-Rendon, two mothers who lost their sons (coincidentally both named Jacob) to Illicit Fentanyl Poisoning have become educational advocates, working to see to it that no other parents and families have to experience that excruciating loss.
They will be sharing their stories and talking about ways to talk to your kids about illicit drugs, how to look for signs that your children are being targeted, or engaging in dangerous activities. They will also be distributing Narcan, so you can have it on hand.
The DEA will also be providing informational brochures.
This free presentation is open to the public, but there are only 35 seats available, so please register early.
Our monthly First Monday Community Talks are always free to attend, but Law Matters does accept and appreciate donations.
